General:
Deciduous shrub, loosely branched, 0.5-1.5 m tall; stems ascending to decumbent, crisp-hairy and glandular-hairy on young growth, unarmed; bark dark reddish-brown.
Leaves:
Leaves alternate, broadly kidney-shaped or rounded, shallowly heart-shaped at the base, 4-8 cm wide, equally to irregularly 5-lobed nearly half their length, the lobes rounded, shallowly 1-2 toothed, sparsely hairy, at least along the veins of the undersurface; stalks equal to or slightly longer than the blades, glabrous.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 8-20 flowers in a drooping raceme shorter than the leaves; flower stalks 4-6 mm long, jointed below the flowers, glabrous or nearly so; petals creamy to pinkish or yellowish-red, wedge- to fan-shaped, 0.8-1 mm long; hypanthium saucer-shaped, 0.8-1 mm long; calyces greenish or greenish-yellow, glabrous; styles glabrous, about equalling the stamens.
Fruits:
Berries, round, red, 0.6-1 cm long, glabrous.

Habitat / Range

Mesic woodlands, disturbed areas, clearings, and roadbanks in the lowland zone; rare in SW BC, known only from the Vancouver area; introduced from Eurasia.
